How often are Army soldiers stationed overseas instead of in the states?

I'm enlisting in the Army as active duty for 2 years as 31B Military Police and I just wanted to know something. How likely is it that I'll be stationed overseas instead of at a base in the states? I live half an hour from Fort Meade, MD, is there any way I could request to be stationed there? Also how long does the entire enlistment process take? Like how long from now until I am registered to ship out?

  1. As far as a PCS move you'll have less of a chance than many years ago. In my time you had a significant chance as there were a number of full divisions in Germany. Now there is a much smaller presence so your chances are less. But.. there are MPs stationed all over the word so in your specific branch there is a better chance. Live a little, go overseas. You can always end up back at Meade later. Don't waste your military experience living close to the home boys and girls.
  2. 2 Year enlistment won't be stationed overseas. You can request to be stationed there. Since it's your home town area, the Army might put you there since it would save them money if you were to get out after 2 years. Less distance to ship you home. It could be a couple of weeks to a year before you ship out. Ask your recruiter...
  3. I wasn't aware that MP's are enlisting for 2 years, last i heard it was a 5 year contract. Make sure you read it before you sign it.
