Would it be wrong to skip on food to save money?
Being 18 1/2, 105-ish lbs, and somewhere around 5'8", considerably but naturally underweight. I have no job which means almost no money, and with the combination of how things are now and where I live, there's no chance at me getting one anytime soon. I know I am hungry every day, but I also know I can't waste $1 at a snack machine for a small bag with almost nothing in it. So, I usually wait until I get home from college and eat whatever little snacks that my parents have.

- you are very thin and being only 105 pounds for being 5'8 is under weight. Dont skip out on meals to save money! Try to cut back on other places:)
- call it what you want but you obviously have an eating disorder
- I would definitely get a job. It's extremely unhealthy to go under weight, or find someone who can support you. No one wants you to get sick.
- Get food stamps. Pack a lunch, don't buy sh*t out of vending machines.
- Of course you should save money instead of eating! Seriously you blonde, COMMON SENSE!
- ask your parents for a few dollars and buy ramen noodles in bulk, at least it's something cause you do need calories every day and ramen is the cheapest thing ever
- why not buy rolled oats they're like 89 cents per pound and filling as well as nutritious
- If you skip a meal your body tears apart sugar molicules in your cell to gain the energy it needs. once the energy molicule goes down to far it cant be repared so your body needs to use more energy to make new ones which starts a cycle of lacking energy that hurts your body.
- well if you spend a dollar a day then you can save about 364 in a year and 30 each month if its the only thing your eating then you should skip meals, but if you get home soon after you lunch it should be so bad and when you get home make sure you get a good lunch
- I don't think you need anyone to tell you that's it bad news to skip meals. You need to eat and if you live with your parents, there's no reason why you can't take something for lunches every day. Forget about junk food snacks....fruit n veg are not as expensive as you think! Don't starve yourself....you will end up sick and useless.
- Yes. Don't buy overpriced vending machine stuff; shop the sales. Buy soup, ichiban, bulk dry goods. Buy soup bones and make soup, freeze any left overs. Don't buy xtras like junkfood.
- I think it's best that you get a job and work to save money. Look for jobs that you can do and don't starve yourself. If you don't eat for a certain amount of time, you can get fatigued and faint! You need to eat, eating is helpful for your health so don't harm yourself trying to save a few bucks!
- I went through this same thing in college. I barely had any money for food. I would eat one frozen burrito a day. I spent $5.00 a week on food and I lost so much weight. I should have went on food stamps. That is what you should do too. Good luck to you.
- make a pb & j sandwich and take it with you. put chips from home in zip lock bag and take with you. take crackers and cheese (if vegetarian) or what ever from home. bananas are filling. that way, you are still having the snacks your parents have at home, but taking them with you so you don't starve while you are out. go to goodwill or other thrift store and buy a small zip up cooler bag to keep your snacks in. i'm a stay at home mama with my son and make every meal at home - save lots of $$$. ** oh yeah, garbanzo beans are like, $.69 per can. one can blended in blender (if your parents have one) w/tad garlic, lemon, salt and pepper...you have hummas...yummm :) $2.99 pita bread...yummm :P
- Stick with fruits as snacks. Also you may qualify for food stamps. Check your government website.
- It's ok to skip snacks and vending machines, but it's not okay to skip real food. Go buy some potatoes, cereals, and other healthy foods. Falafel is extremely filling and has good vitamins and minerals. Buy your food in bulk and divide it up to stretch it. Don't buy garbage and always shop at grocery stores instead of stopping at machines. (How did this land in the vegetarian & vegan category..?)
- yes, and I'm sure you can buy something better than a small bag of chips for a dollar, you can buy lots of things at mcdonalds for a dollar, right? Even your parents eat more than that i would guess. go to a food bank if you must, nothing wrong with it, I;ve done that lots of times................. ok crumbcake?
- There is always food to be found somewhere if you're in the United States. Don't go without. Beans and rice are cheaper than a 2 ounce package of nutritionless crap from a vending machine. Contact someone for help getting food if you cannot afford it.
- Something about this doesn't ring true to me. No one skips on food to save money. They may skimp. They change what they buy and how they eat, but in this country no one need skip on food. There are food pantries, welfare and charities are available and will give you food or tell you how to obtain it under your particular circumstance. If you have to take a bus to get there, so be it. As to how to buy or what to prepare, you've received good ideas from the responses so far. If you're dependent on your parents and they don't have much, they can apply for food stamps, too. Good luck to you. If you do find a job, maybe you should consider a restaurant, everyone working in restaurants gets to eat.
- keep doing this to yourself and you will find yourself overweight when you're older. you will ruin your metabolism if you don't eat properly and regularly.Your body at your age is still developing and up to the age of 26 needs as much calcium as it can get because once you get past this age will not absorb as much calcium as it does when you are young for you to have healthy bones the rest of your life to prevent osteoporosis. So think ahead and why not take snacks with you to school? you can take fruit or nuts or carrot sticks or yoghurt or a sandwich to eat for during the day. you will start to feel healthier and more energetic for it. It's just a matter of being organised before you leave for school in the morning or if you get organised the night before you wont have to rush in the morning. Ask your mum to help you by packing something to take the night before for you. And if you eat from the snack machine you will never have any money and will always feel hungry afterward since this is not the healthiest option for you when you need proper food to help you concentrate during the day. Just remember the body needs fuel and with the right fuel, will perform at its optimum for you when treated well. After all you only get one body for life, so make the most of it and it will serve you well. So remember healthy snacks are cheaper than the vending machines snacks and junk food when you consider 1 tub of yoghurt costs $5.00 as opposed 1 tiny 100 gram bag of chips for $3.00, and a 1kg bag of apples cost around $3.00, and so much better for you. When you start to see the benefits to your health and looks and concentration and energy levels you will know what I mean...not to mention you will not need to find money to put into the vending machine. Good luck!
- Take those few dollars you have and buy things to make sandwiches, mac and cheese, ramen, or other cheap "meals",
- For crying out loud EAT! Your doctors bills will greatly out weigh your $1 snacks from the vending machine when your dying of malnourishment. Save money by buying smart and using coupons from sites like http://brandnamecoupon.com then buy gold with the money you save. check out this article: http://investingoldandsilver.com/Reasons-Buy-Gold-Silver
- You need food shelter and clothing. The only way to get this is to have a job. Have you ever thought about working at a pizza place. I worked at one when I was in high school and college and I ate for free when I worked. Plus you make money. Your not going to get rich but you can eat and have a place to live. Also if you are so young talk to your parents for help. When you do make money you need to do what you can to save it like printing coupons off a computer from a website like http://youreconomicstimulus.blogspot.com/. I hope this helps some.
