  1. How about adopting a shelter dog? All kinds to choose from and you can pick what's right for you and save a life. Since you want a pet and have no preconceived ideas of what breed you want, it's a great way to go.
  2. I'd say to get a labrador. They're great dogs.
  3. Look for a little mut, maybe from the shelter? But definately a mutt because they are strong, have a great little personality and they are totally unique! I have a little Yorkie russell mix and she is just the cutest little thing! Also it depends how much time you want to spend walking and grooming and spending on it. If you want cheap and low maintainence go for a small dog. If you want a bit more expensive and more time walking and caring for it you want a big dog. Do a bit of research on your favourite breeds and then research their care and take it from their. Good luck!
  4. cavalier king charles spaniel, a fun and playful little fella. need to get one as a pup.
  5. The first answerer was spot-on. A shelter dog is a GREAT idea. My dogs have all been shelter dogs... you'll have an animal that might look like no others, and most mutts have THE most amazing personalities, so much better, and much hardier than pure breeds. Not that you can't get a pure breed in a shelter, but mutts need homes, too... and you can ask them about the animals, what type of activity they need, what kind of home they come from, who they get along well with... it's a brilliant idea.
  6. You should find out what breed would match your life. Like, do you want a dog to walk daily, run around with, or a more sedate breed content to stay home? Do you have a fussy lifestyle, and dog hair will bother you? Size an issue? Some breeds need so much more attention because of their intelligence, like Border Collies. They are not house pets! That said, once you find a breed that matches you, you should look for a shelter pet. Many purebreds can be found there. Oh, do you want a puppy or a grown dog? Puppies need training, an adult may not. Our adult shelter dog needed house breaking though. If you get an adult, make sure you get it checked out personality wise before letting around kids or animals, like cats. There are online match the breed quizes out there. Did you already have a breed in mind? I am glad you are waiting to retire. Too many people get a dog when they work and dogs get bored. They are pack animals, and you are the pack leader. They need you around. I am not in favor of the latest fad of "crating" a dog, saying they "like" it.
  7. I've been thinking about getting a dog when I retire too. It will be a rescue dog or one that needs a new home. I'm not too concerned about the breed. I'm thinking about giving a retired greyhound a home. They make good pets and don't need an excessive amount of exercise, just enough to keep him and me fit!
  8. there is no "best breed", we need to know about you. how much exercise? grooming? size? desired dog personality traits?
  9. get a dog that matches your personality, energy, and temperament.
