Retirement gift ideas?
So I need to buy a retirement gift for my father in law...the thing is, he really doesn't "need" anything, and he's pretty simple, so would't want anything fancy. But it's a pretty big deal and we want to get something special. Ideas, thoughts would be great!

- does he like to write? i would say some handsome stationary.
- I don't know what kind of sense of humor he has but me & my family are crazy lol But when a favorite Uncle of ours retired we got a big gift bag in fact 2 so anyway we put a new pillow in it & slippers & a couple of books & he's a Giants fan so we got a throw Giants' blanket we just had fun with it Does your FIL have certain interest or sports minded just go with how he is OK We even got cute Over The Hill gag gifts
- A book about his particular interest would be good. Particularly if it was one not readily available, perhaps even out of print. The gift of ones self and time are always most appreciated. Arrange a day or two to join him on a journey to do something or visit something that is important to him. Fancy isn't as important as the thought behind it. That you want to do something significant suggests you'll find the best thing to do. He's lucky to have a son-in-law such as you.
- What is is planning to do after he retires? Other than drive your MIL crazy, I mean? ;-) When a man we go to church with retired, I found out he was going to be meeting his retired cronies at McDonald's to eat breakfast and solve the problems of the world every morning. I bought him books of McDonald's gift certificates. He was thrilled. If there's some sort of activity he's going to be doing, get him something to help cover that expense.
- I like the gift certificate idea. As wife of a soon to retire man, I'm not looking forward to his being around for breakfast and lunch now. Also just because he retires, don't I get a break too? I'm tired of cooking!! Less money will mean less eating out, so all help is appreciated. If he has a hobby, something to fit his hobby and that will hopefully keep him busy. If he doesn't have a hobby, how about a gift certificate to a health club, movie theater, whatever to keep him from driving his wife nuts!
- if hes going to be traveling a lot during his retirement or hanging out with family and friends, he might enjoy a new camera to take pictures or better quality pictures where ever he goes. Cameta Camera also has some nice ones on sale right now.
