How do I decommission/retire a Windows XP Professional PC from my domain/network? What's the quickest and safest way to prepare a computer for donation and remove it from the network/domain?

  1. get a freaken mac like a normal person.
  2. quick doesn't go w/ safe, in this case :) do a low lever format. this will erase ur hard drive w/ government standard.
  3. Do a clean install, preceded by a couple of runs with something like DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) - http://www.dban.org/ That will remove all possible personal info and settings from the computer.
  4. You must be logged on as an Administrator for this. Go to Control Panel>System>Computer Name I can't remember the actual option, I think it's "Change" but from here you should be able to remove it from its current domain. Hope this helps!
  5. if you are going to still use the computer just right click on my computer then go to properties then click on the Computer name tab. there should be a setting there saying "to rename this computer or join a domain, click Change" you will want to do that when you do that just go to wrokgroup insted of doamin and make shear that you have the admin name and password for the domain or you will not be able to change it off the domain.
  6. Consider selling without the hard drive and mechanically destroying the drive.
