why is connan o brian take over the tonight show?

why did jay leno retire??!!?

1. Jay announced he was leaving 3 or 4 years ago. Conan was picked probably for several reasons. 1) he was already affiliated with NBC. 2) it's doubtful someone like Jon Stewart would leave his successful show for such a low ratings network like NBC; same thing with Letterman. And Leno might have left the Tonight Show, but still has his own primetime show coming later in the year.
