Can you collect unemployment after military retirement?
My husband is getting ready to retire as an E-6 at 20 years. He is having to retire due to higher tenure. If he is not able to find a job right away after retirement will he be able to collect unemployment benefits?

- Yes, but they will be offset by his retirement pay which may make him ineligible.
- No since the Military does NOT pay into the Unemployment Insurance fund in any state.
- He will not be able to collect against the Military, Since he is collecting a retirement check. Down the road, if he works a civilian job long enough, he would be eligible if laid off. Depending on the state you have to work 4-5 quarters to earn benefits. I collected unemployment for a few weeks, when laid off. I had been retired two years and earn benefits from a civilian job.
- Yes, it will all be explained to him in his retirement/sep classes. Actually you can apply in any state (if I remember right) at the time I retired (2003) the instructors said that Mass and Texas had the highest rates. And yes it may be off-set by his retainer check (it is not a retirement check until his 30 yr mark) but that is depends on what state he files in. Most states also have a time limit that you have to file but again he will find all of this and more during his separation classes they even had a workshop for us on resume writing. Congrats and Best of Luck with the retirement. The hardest thing for him is going to be figuring out what to wear when he wakes up in the morning (no more uniforms) LOL, had to go clothes shopping when I retired.
- Yes he can collect unemployment if he cannot find a job, he would also be eligible for the retirement pay & disability. He should take the TAPS class as soon as possible and you can take it as well as it will give you some information.
