Can I receive US Social Security retirement benefit whilst living in Australia?

I am a resident of Australia(also a NZ citizen, dual with US). I am not of retirement age...YET, but just want to make sure that I can get my SS benefit, even if Im not living in US.

  1. Im in Australia and our latest pensioner booklet says yes but you have to let the Aussie centerlink mob know how much etc.
  2. I would talk to someone at SSA (Social Security Administration). It depends on how long you've worked in the US. When a US citizen pays taxes while working, you earn credits. How many credits you've earned depends on what you can get. If you are no longer living in this country, I'm not sure. Talk to SSA (they do have a website with contact information).
  3. yes, just make sure the US Social Security department has your correct address and your check will be in the mail!!!
  4. If you are due SS on retirement, you CAN collect it wherever you live. There are many thousands of beneficiaries, both US and non-US citizens, collecting benefits overseas. Contact the American Citizen Services section of the nearest US embassy or consulate for details on how to apply and collect. Most beneficiaries in developed countries can now receive their benefits by monthly direct deposit. Here are all the locations and contact info: http://usembassy.state.gov/
